On Tuesday, Planning Director Richard Wynne announced the new bill. In July this year, the Andrews government announced a grant of 600 million yuan to dismantle the dangerous envelope in more than 500 buildings with high fire risks.
The government has also set up a new agency, the Cladding Safety Victoria, to oversee the repair of the cladding. Wynne pointed out that the state government has audited more than 2,500 buildings, and one-fifth of them are considered “at risk.” An economic analysis released in August this year shows that the cost of repairing a nationwide crisis may reach billions of yuan. But Wynne believes that the $600 million grant is more appropriate. He also called on the federal government to tighten import restrictions on construction products.
