The Royal Australian Mint calls it “donation Australian dollars”-a coin specially made that people hope people can donate. The Mint began producing 25 million donation coins-roughly one for every Australian-hoping to boost charity.

The design of this special coin has a green center with golden ripples, symbolizing the continuous positive impact of each donation. This is also the first Australian dollar coin with an unexpected golden color to be discovered in Australia. Ross MacDiarmid, president of the Mint, said he hoped Australians would notice such a special design and consider who needs the money most. “I hope they can look at the message of this coin and consider donating it.” This message is engraved around the green center: “Give to help others.”

Behind this world-first move is a survey found that 57% of Australians said they would donate special coins if they found special coins in their coin purses.
