Starting this week, a carriageway will be closed and converted into a new pedestrian zone. This construction not only beautifies the city, but also improves traffic safety in the urban area. It is expected that there will be 400 square meters of additional space for pedestrians. Mayor Sally Capp said that more attractive and functional streetscapes will be created in the next few years. She said: “We are pleased to announce the start of the construction of the southern end of Elizabeth Street. We have created spaces for city residents, office workers and visitors to maintain a safe distance between public transportation and nearby shops. There will be new trees and greenery, new streets, Street lights and bluestone pavement”. The scope of construction from this week will include the southbound traffic lane between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane and the lane on the east side of Elizabeth Street in front of the Coles Supermarket to be converted into a pedestrian zone. In addition, an underground drainage network will be installed to reduce flooding. Cars will still be able to use the other side of the road in front of the 7-11 store, along Elizabeth Street to the city center. The construction will begin this week, and the old street facilities will be demolished before construction. The fence will be installed on the east side of Elizabeth Street, between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. She said that it is important to provide more space for pedestrians, while creating a more attractive area for residents, working and shopping people. She said: “Before the lockdown, the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street was one of our busiest crosswalks, with as many as 10,000 people passing through the area during peak hours every hour.”
