A draft extending Jobkeeper and JobSeeker to March will be submitted to Parliament on Wednesday and will be passed with the support of the Labour Party. Morrison told reporters in Canberra: “I expect that we will continue to provide this one-time largest income aid that Australians have ever received.”
The Labour Party supports this regulation, even though it has expressed concern that employers’ reduction in working hours has not been resolved. Companies that continue to obtain JobKeeper still have the right to change their employees’ working hours, positions or working locations. Other companies that have been excluded from JobKeeper can also reserve the right to change the above conditions if they prove that their turnover has decreased by 10%.
The Morrison government plans to reduce the biweekly salary subsidy of A$1,500 to A$1200 at the end of September, and then to A$1,000 from December to March. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is responsible for determining the amount, which means that no legislation is required for these changes. As the Victorian lockdown hits the national economy, the Labour Party hopes that Jobkeeper can continue to maintain a fortnightly $1,500 for another six months.
