Australian house prices continued to rise in January, with more than just Sydney and Melbourne. The capital cities of Southeast Australia continued to lead, with Melbourne up 1.2% and Sydney 1.1%, but other cities also rose, and the struggling Perth and Darwin markets also rose 0.1%.

Overall, CoreLogic figures show that growth has slowed from the peak of spring price increases, with capital cities rising by an average of 0.9% and areas outside the capital by 0.7%. “Considering seasonal factors, recent results show that most markets have slowed down, especially Sydney and Melbourne, which are less affordable,” said Tim Lawless, director of research at CoreLogic.

“There are more advertisements for selling houses than at the beginning of the year, so the growth rate may be further reduced.”
