Today, Prime Minister Morrison will fly to East Timor to participate in the celebration of the 20th anniversary of East Timor’s independence.

Twenty years ago, when East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia, Australia led international joint forces to station in the area to protect peace. The peacekeeping force also hit local pro-Indonesian militia.

During the visit, Morrison will sign a new maritime agreement with the East Timorese government. Australia and East Timor will share natural gas produced in the Greater Sunrise oil and gas fields in the Timor Sea. It is expected to contain $74 billion worth of natural gas.

The agreement stipulates that East Timor receives more than 70% of the concession use of the gas field.
