In 2017, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) found that half of the users who use fiber-to-node connections to NBN could not get the fastest two-speed. Eight vendors, including Telstra, Optus and TPG, acknowledged that they made false or misleading statements about the speed of connections that some users might use.

The ACCC received assurances from retailers that more than 142,000 users were affected and would provide solutions, including downgrading to lower speed and cheaper plans, or allowing users to withdraw from the contract.

Experts say that about two-thirds of the affected users have not responded to retailers’ letters or emails, they may be eligible for a refund, and some can get a refund of hundreds of dollars, those who claim to be able to provide themselves Retailers who can’t do high-speed networks are at risk of violating Australian consumer protection laws, and we expect retailers to provide users with accurate information on the actual speeds they can get and then fulfill their promises.
