Victorian union leader John Setka faces the expulsion from the Labour Party, but he will get more time to defend his actions.
Federal Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese said the construction worker wrote a letter to the top of the Labor Party on Friday asking for an extension.
Albanese wants to expel the Victorian CFMEU leader from the party, saying his actions are inconsistent with the Labor Party values.
Setka admits to harassing his wife by text message and violating the court ban, and was sentenced to a good year of behavior last week.
Albanese said that Setka argued that he did not have enough time to prepare for the national high-level meeting. One of the reasons was that the court heard.
Albanese said that the union leader would be prepared for 10 days, but he is confident that the Labour Party will expel him.
Setka can be said to be the most famous trade union leader in the country. He has deep conflicts with the Federal Labor Party and other trade unions, but he refused to step down.
“If Setka is a rugby player, he would have been expelled from the club for his violations. He will be expelled from the Labour Party,” the opposition leader said.
The senior members of the Labor Party are scheduled to meet on Friday to decide to stay in Setka, and are now postponed until July 15.
Both the ruling and opposition parties have called for his resignation, and some trade unionists have also called for his resignation.
Setka has always refused to resign, saying that his stay can only be decided by CFMEU members.
