If the energy market regulator can accept the federal government’s request to change the rules, then the late payment of late fees on the electricity bill will become a thing of the past. Energy Minister Angus Taylor has asked the Australian Energy Market Board to terminate the practice of charging high late fees if the customer pays late or fails to meet other conditions under the discount program. The late payment fee affects approximately one-quarter of the customers and can add $500 to $1000 per year for household bills that are paid only once per night.
