The main idea of the new law is to make it easier for those who commit terrorist crimes to be deprived of Australian citizenship. Under the current law, the government only deprives those who have been sentenced to more than six years of nationality. The new law will introduce a bill that allows the government to deprive anyone of the nationality of a terrorist offence.

The government also hopes to change the current eligibility conditions for deprivation of nationality so that the government can only “reasonably satisfy” that the person is eligible for the nationality of another country. The bill is a response to the terrorist attack on Melbourne's Boke Street earlier this month and will be introduced into Parliament in the coming weeks.
